Alex Palou wins from the pole position by fighting off Will Power. Palou owns a points lead of a full race.
The Chip Ganassi Racing driver, after securing his second consecutive pole and his first-ever on an IndyCar street course, looked to be on for a comfortable win. But after several late cautions, he had to fight fiercely to hold off defending series champion Will Power with a 1.1843-second lead at the checkered flag. The 2021 champ has a 51-point lead on his CGR teammate Marcus Ericsson through seven of the season’s 17 races – essentially a full race weekend’s worth of a cushion.
Palou was holding a comfortable 6.2-second lead at the time of Grosjean’s crash. With 14 laps left, the field attempted to get back going on a run of action-packed green flag laps to the end, and Palou created a bit of a gap with his jump, but as the green flag flew at the restart line, David Malukas lost it in the Turn 9 wall, setting up another restart Palou would have to keep Power at bay.
On Lap 96, the field took the green flag for the final time, with Palou getting a far better jump that would preserve his victory, becoming the series’ second multi-race-winner of the year alongside Josef Newgarden.place back from Rossi in Turn 4, leading to a multi-lap battle between the two front-running Arrow McLaren drivers. After multiple shoves and some wheel-banging, Rosenqvist ended up holding onto the final podium position.
