An Indonesian woman and her lover were sentenced to two months in prison and fined RM1,000 for fortune-telling using tarot cards on the social media platform TikTok. The Negeri Sembilan Syariah High Court found them guilty of engaging in an act contrary to Islamic law.

A 39-year-old Indonesian woman and her lover were sentenced to two months in prison and fined RM1,000 by the Syariah High Court here today for the offence of engaging in an act contrary to Islamic law, namely fortune-telling using tarot cards , last year. Judge Zulfikri Yasoa imposed the sentence on Herlin Juita and Noriah Mahamad Isa, 40, after both pleaded guilty to the charge read to them.

The court also ordered that the convicts be given an additional seven days in prison if they fail to pay the fine. However, it is understood that both convicts have settled the fine. According to the charge, Herlin Juita was found to have committed an act contrary to Islamic law, namely fortune-telling using tarot cards through a TikTok application registered under the username @princess_herlin. The offence was committed on December 13, 2024, between about 5 pm and 7 pm at a house in Taman Tiara Sendayan, here. In this regard, the accused had committed an offence under Section 52 of the Negeri Sembilan Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992. If found guilty, a fine of not more than RM5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both may be imposed. Noriah, on the other hand, was found to have abetted Herlin in committing the offence by acting as an assistant to increase the number of viewers and attract viewers to attract customers. For this offence, she was charged under Section 35 read together with Section 52 of the Negeri Sembilan Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992. The prosecution was conducted by the Chief Syarie Prosecutor of the Negeri Sembilan Syariah Prosecution Department, Azizuddin Abdullah, while the accused were unrepresented by counsel. Previously, media reports on December 18 reported that an Indonesian woman was detected to be actively engaged in occult activities by fortune-telling for customers using tarot cards on the social media platform TikTok, earning a considerable amount of income. The activities of the Muslim woman and her lover, a 30-year-old man, were however, successfully detected by the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) recently. It is understood that based on investigations, they are suspected to have earned more than RM100 within two hours through their fortune-telling activities by charging a certain fee.
