Brazil has officially informed Indonesia of its acceptance as a full member of the BRICS bloc, expanding the major emerging economy group. Indonesia previously expressed its desire to join the group as a way to strengthen the developing countries bloc and advance the interests of the so-called Global South. Brazil, which holds the bloc's presidency in 2025, said all member states unanimously approved Indonesia's admission as part of an expansion drive initially approved at the bloc's summit in South Africa two years ago. Brazil stated that Indonesia's bid received the green light from the bloc in 2023, but the Asian nation requested to join after the presidential election held in 2024. President Prabowo Subianto will assume office in October 2024. 'Indonesia shares with other group members support for reforming global governance institutions and making a positive contribution to strengthening cooperation in the Global South,' said the Brazilian government. The BRICS group also includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
