Bishop Angkur of Bogor, known for his humility despite holding prominent positions including a lawmaker in Papua, died at 87.

Indonesia mourns the death of a retired bishop known for his modesty despite serving in many important positions, including as a lawmaker in Papua. Bishop Angkur of Bogor died at age 87 on Dec. 18 in Labuan Bajo, a fishing town on the Catholic-majority island of Flores, where he lived after retiring. In a statement, the Franciscan Province of St. Michael the Archangel, Indonesia said the prelate’s health deteriorated on Dec. 17. He was rushed to hospital in Labuan Bajo.

Father Agustinus, a priest from Labuan Bajo, who accompanied him to the hospital, said, “Intensive care was given, but God has just called the bishop back to His bosom.” Bishop Angkur led the Diocese of Bogor in West Java province, which is predominantly Muslim, until 2014. After his retirement, the bishop spent his time tending to his garden and serving people who came to him for guidance. Kornelis Ruben, a parishioner in Bogor diocese, remembered the bishop as someone who was “very simple, kind and friendly with everyone.” “Meeting him always left an impression, especially because of his simplicity,” said Ruben, who is a teacher. Father Agustinus called him “the embodiment of Francis of Assisi.” “If you want to see a modern Francis of Assisi, look at the bishop,” said the former Franciscan seminarian who was once mentored by the prelate. Bishop Angkur was born in Lewur, West Manggarai Regency, Flores. He was the fifth among eight children of their farmer parents. He was ordained a priest in 1967 and served in a number of locations, including Timor-Leste and Papua. In Papua, he was asked by Catholics to become the chairperson of the Jayawijaya Regency Parliament. From 1971-1977, he served as a member of the West Papua Provincial Parliament and on an official commission that oversaw religious, social, and educational issues. The Catholic Church in those days allowed priests to become parliamentarians, with permission from the local bishop and the head of their order, as there were very few educated local people
