As Indianapolis heads into one of the coldest weekends this year, a memorial service was held Wednesday for 197 people who experienced homelessness.

In a packed Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Indianapolis, families, friends and nonprofit workers gathered to raise awareness on the toll of the homelessness crisis, inspire activism and advocacy and remember those who died. The ceremony included speakers, executive director of CHIP Chelsea Haring-Cozzi and Mayor Joe Hogsett, candle lighting, a tolling of the bells and prayers."Today, we are here to show them that we do care, that we do remember, and we will continue to work until homelessness in our community is brief, until it's rare and until it is survivable," said Hogsett.

The number of people memorialized on Dec. 21 has been increasing, and more than tripled since 2019, according to CHIP data.
