Indian troops killed five Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh, part of an ongoing effort to quell the decades-long insurgency.
NEW DELHI: Indian troops killed at least five Maoist guerrillas in the latest effort to crush a decades-long insurgency. More than 10,000 people have been killed in the rebellion led by the rebel group, which claims to be fighting for the rights of marginalized indigenous communities in resource-rich areas in central India. Police Chief P. Sunderraj said security forces found the five Maoist bodies, indicating a battle in the dense forests of Bijapur district in the state of Chhattisgarh.
He said they recovered weapons from the rebels' bodies, three men and two women, including a bomb launcher and rifles. In a separate incident, two police officers were injured after a homemade bomb exploded in Bijapur district. The government army has intensified efforts to quell the decades-long guerrilla conflict, with 287 rebels killed in 2024, according to official figures. The rebels, also known as Naxalites after the start of their armed campaign in Naxalbari region in 1967, are inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong. Approximately 1,000 suspected Naxalites were arrested and 837 surrendered last year. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly set a deadline of March 2026 to eradicate Maoism. - AF
