This damaged house in the landslide-hit Chooralmala village in southern Kerala's Wayanad district was photographed on Aug. 4. The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council announced in a statement on Aug. 6 that it will construct the houses on land sanctioned by the state government in Wayanad.
Many followers of these Kerala-based Churches reside in the state’s hilly districts, located in the resource-rich Western Ghats. The priest said many teams from the various churches were taking care of traumatized survivors in relief camps in the worst affected parts of the district. Fr Sunny Abraham, parish priest of St. Joseph’s Church in Meppadi village near the affected area, said rescue operations to locate the missing people among the debris are still on after eight days of the tragedy.
Nearly 2,500 victims are currently accommodated in relief camps in the district known for its tea and cardamom plantations. Victims include workers in these plantations.
