NEW DELHI, June 10 — Indian and Chinese military commanders made progress in talks today to defuse a standoff along their disputed border in the western Himalayas after pulling back some troops in confidence-building gestures, Indian government officials said. The two sides made headway in their talks today, officials in Delhi said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

The two armies have since thinned out some forces in a positive signal but soldiers, tanks and other armoured carriers remained heavily deployed in the high-altitude region, the official said.
