To many, France Jr. was the surprise choice in the first class. There is no question he was worthy of selection, but some thought several accomplished drivers were better fits for the first class. France Jr. took the sport his father had organized and turned it into a behemoth, expanding its Southeastern roots, attracting more notice from television and building support from Fortune 500 companies.
The first five hall members were selected from a list of 25 nominees.
