Father of two Brandt Rempe describes his family’s harrowing night inside the active search area for escaped murderer Danelo Cavalcante.
Brandt Rempe appeared to all the world like a man relaxing on his back porch overlooking his expansive Chester County property and enjoying a rare day off.
Even with his wife, Emily, also home from her teaching job, this dad wasn’t taking any chances. Not when the Monday night break-in during whichfrom a property owner who returned fire occurred at a farm down the road where Rempe gets his eggs. On the ground, at least one armed officer is stationed every 40 yards or so along the entire circumference of the perimeter. The search area is described by police as 3 miles wide and 2 1/2-miles long. It’s filled with hills, wood thickets, fields of 6-foot-tall sweetcorn and numerous barns, sheds and shacks.“It’s tough terrain,” Rampe said. “Look at it. And he’s a slippery little dude.”
“Nothing happens here. That’s why I like it. It’s so quiet. People are so nice. My kids have tons of friends and good schools. Everybody knows each other,” Rempe said. “I’ll put it this way. It’s the most kid-friendly place. I always wanted to live here.” “They’re driving side-by-sides with guns on them. It was nonstop,” he recounted. “It was just people with guns everywhere. That was horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Rempe said he tries to keep things as normal as possible for his two young children. Monday night, he went out to walk the dog, as usual. What wasn’t typical were the police drones buzzing like large locusts over the fields around his land.
