People gathered at River Landing for the first Canada Day celebrations since 2019, while Cancel Canada Day events took place in Kiwanis Park
Festivities have been cancelled for the past two years, in the wake of the pandemic — and in 2020, with the identification of unmarked graves at the sites of residential schools across the country. Last year’s event instead took the form of a more sombre memorial honouring of the victims of Canada’s colonial history.
People dressed in red and white took to River Landing in droves Friday afternoon as Cancel Canada Day events took place a short distance downriver. Organizers with ChokeCherry Studios back the event back this year to recognize the children who died in residential schools, missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, and ’60s Scoop survivors. Throughout the day, there were speakers, a smudge walk, a community art installation and a flash mob round dance.People participate in a smudge walk in honour of MMIWGT2S and Indigenous Children, families and communities affected by Residential Schools.
