Mariah Martinez, a bisexual titleholder in Iowa, said she spent her early adolescence battling suicidal ideation and depression, but the Miss America Organization helped her find a sense of purpose, a community, and an outlet for her leadership skills. “I didn’t even think I was going to be alive at this point,” Mariah recalled. “This organization fills in so many blanks I had.”
Now that more LGBTQ+ people are openly competing in the system, this notion of found family has expanded. In June, LGBTQ+ titleholders around the country connected with one another online. While some contestants in red states said they were still the only openly LGBTQ+ person competing, people from New York, Massachusetts, California, Indiana, and Iowa mentioned finding queer community.
I was initially surprised at the range of fashion choices contestants seemed to feel comfortable exploring. But I soon learned that many LGBTQ+ folks still felt constrained by expectations of what titleholders are supposed to look like, often because of feedback from conservative judges.
