Author James Ellroy slams Curtis Hanson’s adaption of his novel L.A. Confidential, including Russell Crowe’s lead performance as Bud White.

L.A. Confidential author James Ellroy slams Curtis Hanson's 1997 adaptation of his novel and star Russell Crowe's leading performance. Released in 1997, L.A. Confidential tells the story of three policemen in 1950s Los Angeles working to weed out corruption. The neo-noir crime film stars Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, and Danny DeVito, and earned rave reviews from audiences and critics alike upon its release.

Now, however, more than 7 years after Hanson's death, Ellroy makes his true feelings regarding the L.A. Confidential adaption known during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. The author holds nothing back about the film and takes particular issue with Crowe's chemistry with Basinger, who plays his on-screen love interest. Check out Ellroy's comments below:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT “People love the movie ‘L.A. Confidential.’ I think it’s turkey of the highest form. I think Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger are impotent. The director [Curtis Hanson] died, so now I can disparage the movie.”Why L.A. Confidential Earned Such Strong Reviews It's fair to say that most critics, at least at the time of the film's release, wouldn't agree with Ellroy's current assessment of L.A. Confidential.

Many of the sentiments expressed in Ebert's review are echoed by other critics as well. The film is genuinely unpredictable, and it takes its time unveiling the answers to its many mysteries. The noir crime genre was also well-trodden ground at the time of L.A. Confidential's release, and Hanson's adaptation manages to subvert and complicate many of the most well-known conventions of the genre.

Contrary to Ellroy's own opinions, the performances in L.A. Confidential were also heavily praised. The film was released before Crowe became a star with Ridley Scott's Gladiator in 2000, and it announced the Australian actor as a major Hollywood screen presence. While L.A. Confidential is still widely considered one of the most seminal and acclaimed neo-noir crime dramas of all time, it's clear that the hardest audience member to impress was evidently the author of the book himself.
