With mills in Negros running in full swing and the arrival of 150,000 metric tons of imported sugar, markets are now awash with the sweetener, Sugar Regulatory Board member and Planters' Representative Pablo Luis Azcona said on Monday. In a radio interview, Azcona said that the retail price of sugar also went down. He said that importers complied with the deadline set by President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.
Earlier, SRA Administrator Dave Alba said that the prices of sugar will stabilize between P70 to P80 per kilo in November. Azcona added that the ample supply of sugar is expected to last until June 2023. Of the 150,000 metric tons of imported sugar, 75,000 metric tons went to the industrial users like soft drink manufacturers. The other 75,000 metric tons are in the markets. Azcona said that the SRA will introduce programs to support the sugar farmers.
