Arrested President Yoon Suk Yeol received an average of seven daily visits from lawyers during his imprisonment, raising questions about his privileged treatment.
President Yoon Suk Yeol , currently detained at the Seoul Detention Center following his indictment, received a total of 70 outside visitors between January 15 and February 3, averaging seven visits per day over the 10 weekdays. According to data from the Justice Ministry compiled by Rep. Kim Seung-won of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea, 66 of these visits were from Yoon's lawyers.
While South Korean law does not restrict the length or frequency of inmate meetings with lawyers, the frequency of Yoon's meetings has sparked debate, as a typical inmate has a single meeting with legal representation roughly once every 50 days. According to the latest Justice Ministry figures, a South Korean inmate had an average of 5.5 meetings with their lawyers throughout 2023. Given an average daily prison population of 56,577 inmates and 310,379 legal visits, this translates to an average of 37.5 total jail visits per inmate annually, including lawyers, family, friends, and others, or slightly over three visits per month. This suggests that Yoon is enjoying a privileged prison life and shows no remorse after allegedly leading an insurrection through a self-coup in December, stated Rep. Kim.Yoon's legal team defended the frequency of meetings, asserting that any defendant on trial has a constitutional right to legal defense and established precedents regarding meeting limitations. They also emphasized the urgency of reviewing records for witness examinations due to the Constitutional Court's expedited impeachment trial procedure. Meanwhile, ruling People Power Party Reps. Yoon Sang-hyun and Kim Meen-geon visited Yoon at the detention center on Friday, following visits from other ruling party lawmakers on Monday. Rep. Yoon reported that President Yoon urged his supporters to remain unified in the face of the crisis threatening South Korea's liberal democracy and stated that his decision to personally appear at the impeachment trial was a wise one, claiming it prevented further misrepresentation of events surrounding the martial law declaration
