Joseph M. Czuba, of Plainfield, Illinois, is facing multiple charges in connection with the death of 6-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume and the wounding of his mother, 32-year-old Hanaan Shahin.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Illinois — A 71-year-old landlord stabbed a 6-year-old Muslim boy and his mother Saturday morning, killing the boy and critically wounding the mother in an attack that has sparked national outrage.
Deputies found the boy and his mother in a bedroom of the residence, both with multiple stab wounds. Both were taken to a hospital, where Wadea later died. Shahin had more than a dozen stab wounds but is expected to recover, according to the sheriff’s office. She ran to the bathroom to call 911, but when she emerged she discovered her son had been stabbed to death, the statement says.The sheriff’s office says Czuba did not make any statements to detectives following the attack. The sheriff’s office says investigators believe Czuba attacked the woman and boy because they are Muslim and he was upset about the current conflict between Israel and Hamas.Sunday, saying that he and first lady Jill Biden were “shocked and sickened” by news of the incident.
