The 'ComEd 4' convictions provided the latest tale of Democratic corruption in Illinois. But the case is unlikely to provide a major boost to the state's minority Republican party.

The defendants who were found guilty on all counts in"ComEd Four" trial. Charged were Madigan’s longtime confidant, Michael McClain, 75, of downstate Quincy, former ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore, 64, ex-ComEd lobbyist John Hooker, 73, and Jay Doherty, 69, the former head of the City Club of Chicago.

Former Illinois House Republican leader Jim Durkin, who left the legislature after last year’s elections solidified the Democrats’ legislative supermajorities, said the verdict “opened a window” for GOP candidates to go after Democratic lawmakers who participated in Madigan’s operation. ” ‘Republicans, you’re anti-women, you’re anti-choice.’ We’ve got to stay away from that,” Durkin said, “particularly in the areas where we have to compete and where we should be winning — that is in the suburbs and the collar counties.”

State Rep. Jim Durkin at an Illinois House committee hearing at the Bilandic Building about new gun legislation on Dec. 12, 2022. Charles Wheeler, a former statehouse reporter and longtime observer of Illinois politics, said the impact of the verdicts pales in comparison “to the fact that the Republican Party has gone so far right and that they’re so in bed with Donald Trump, who is I think, probably going to be a much bigger drain on their ticket.”
