An estimated 16 tonnes of tobacco was found on an isolated property in NSW’s central west following a tip-off. 7NEWS

An estimated 16 tonnes of illicit tobacco worth $28 million has been seized in a police raid on a property in theThe raid was part of a joint investigation between the Australian Border Force , NSW Police and the Australian Taxation Office , after receiving information last year that an illegal tobacco crop was being grown on a property in Murga, about 55km east of Parkes.

“Collaborative efforts are necessary to target any criminal activity which brings potential harm to our community.”ATO Assistant Commissioner Justin Clarke said organised crime syndicates continued to carry out illicit tobacco growing operations in Australia. “Involvement in illicit tobacco is a serious offence, and the ATO is with the community and our partner agencies including state and federal police to stamp out the illicit tobacco trade,” Clarke said.

“These criminal syndicates are sophisticated and run like a business, so they will do whatever it takes to ensure they have a supply and can continue to bring in a profit at the expense of legitimate business owners and the wider Australian community.”It is illegal to grow tobacco in Australia without having the appropriate excise licence.
