World No. 1 Iga Swiatek defeated Ons Jabeur to win the U.S. Open and claim her second major title of the season
Long before the chair umpire called for the start of Saturday’s second set, Iga Swiatek had sprung out of her chair, bounced to the baseline and rehearsed her footwork. She knew she was rolling and there wasn’t a moment to waste. While her opponent Ons Jabeur sat still, Swiatek wanted to get back to work: the world No. 1 had a third major title to win.
With three major titles in her career, the typically reserved Swiatek is emerging as the dominant force on the women’s circuit. In a year that has seen the retirements of Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty , Swiatek, 21, is now clearly the woman to beat at every tournament she plays, no matter the surface.
“Iga never loses finals, so it’s going to be very tough,” she said before the match, referring to Swiatek’s run of nine consecutive straight-set victories in tournament finals. “I know she struggled a little bit with the balls here, but I don’t see her struggling much, to be honest with you.”timothy a. clary/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
