Ice sheets can collapse faster than previously thought possible nature
An international team of researchers, led by Dr. Christine Batchelor of Newcastle University, U.K., used high-resolution imagery of the seafloor to reveal just how quickly a formerthat extended from Norway retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, about 20,000 years ago.
Example of corrugation ridges on the seafloor of mid-Norway. Two ridges were produced each day by the tidal-induced vertical motion of the retreating ice sheet margin. Detailed bathymetric data. The new research suggests that periods of such rapid ice-sheet retreat may only last for short periods of time .
