Dear Care and Feeding,
My son “Terrence” is just over 3 years old, and is well ahead of a lot of developmental milestones expected of his age. He can already read and write and do most forms of arithmetic. While I’m very proud of his gifts, he’s very strong-willed for a child of his age, and he still has poor judgment expected of a child that young.We live in a condominium complex, and there’s an outdoor pool.
He didn’t have a tantrum. What he did do was point out why it was “silly” for me to insist on going to the pool with him, when he knew the way, the community was safe, and there was a lifeguard at the pool. He only started getting upset when I said that I wasn’t interested in his justifications and that he wasn’t going to the pool without either me or his father along.
I don’t know how to deal with him. That sort of thing is something I expected when he was 13, not 3. And I can tell that there’s going to be more of the same down the line. I have gotten some material on parenting a gifted child, but it’s all about how to academically enrich them, not how to deal with the fact that they don’t entirely act their age, but don’t entirely stray away from their age either.
