Rose Lehane Tureen, 13, says she was forced to grow up after getting COVID-19. More than a year of long-haul COVID symptoms has changed her life and now she wants kids to be taken seriously for their symptoms.
Rose, 13, has lived with a chronic headache since she came down with COVID-19 in March 2020. On a pain scale of one to 10, she says it's a constant seven. Her headaches, however, become more manageable when she's out in nature:"It's a good distraction from my headache."13, seems destined for success. She’s smart, thoughtful, passionate and full of energy.Nearly everything came easily to her then.
Sometimes it gets worse, though. She’s been to the emergency room half a dozen times and hospitalized twice with dizziness and blinding pain. For more than a year, she felt like most of the string of doctors she saw didn’t really hear her complaints. They told her that her symptoms – which also include red, swollen fingers, toes and ears; peeling skin; temperature control problem; joint pain and terrible dreams – must be unrelated.
Finally, in the middle of a summer spent in her mother’s hometown in Maine, she came out of a two-hour visit to Boston Children’s Hospital feeling heard.
