For Winmar the moment, which changed his life and at times overshadowed his successful football career, is bound up in the triumph and camaraderie he shared with his teammates that day.

and at times overshadowed his successful football career, is bound up in the triumph and camaraderie he shared with his teammates that day.

Before that match, Winmar had spoken with Gilbert McAdam, another Aboriginal player with St Kilda, to fortify themselves before facing the racial abuse, swearing and spitting from the notorious Collingwood home crowd as they emerged on the field. “I can honestly say that I came away a different person,” he says of listening to Winmar in February before contributing to the artwork.

Everitt was playing only his fourth game when Winmar raised his shirt. “It was a huge stand, and nobody knew [what it would mean]. I don’t think even Nicky knew,” he said. “I said, ‘enough is enough, I’m over it, I’m tired, and I’m sick of it’,” Winmar recalls of thinking as he lifted his jumper up. “I’m black and I’m proud, I’m sick of the abuse.”A United Nations conference later heard how Winmar’s gesture should be a catalyst for action against racism in all its forms. McAdam was later appointed the AFL’s first Indigenous liaison officer.

Winmar sees his role in challenging racism in sport as part of a “relay race” that has passed across generations. He aptly names Jesse Owens, the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals including as a relay runner, as a role model who inspired him. Australian Indigenous footballers Sir Doug Nicholls, Graham “Polly” Farmer, Stephen Michael and Maurice Rioli also paved the path, and cricketer Johnny Mullagh, he says.
