“We were worried, of course,” the 33-year old Kovalenko said, speaking to National Post from a town near Kharkiv whose location cannot be disclosed for security purposes.

The situation just got worse. By the fifth day of the war, airstrikes were hitting Kharkiv. “The planes were literally flying over my head,” Kovalenko said.“I left Kharkiv when planes started flying over the city all the time,” says Kovalenko. “Maybe every five minutes, there was an air raid siren. We saw one explosion that was so big it looked like a nuclear bomb, on March 1, and that’s when I decided to leave the city. Every 15 minutes we were hearing some explosion.
“We are still scared, because if the Russian invaders come here, we don’t have such an army and protection like in the city. There are many people who have stayed in Kharkiv and they are alone, so we try and keep in touch with them. The situation in Kharkiv is terrible now, a humanitarian catastrophe. But even the town I am in now is being fired on . At least not in such a terrible situation as Kharkiv,” she says.
