“I’m very keen on consent and protecting my baby’s privacy,” the mom wrote in a post that sparked debate online.
“She gave him back straight after but it annoyed me as it wasn’tShe went on to add in a comment that she and her husband are trying to create a “positive” experience when it comes to diaper changes, as her son “doesn’t enjoy” them.The concerned mom said she knows infants can’t give consent — but she is trying to “set standards early,” insisting she would expect his grandparents to ask her son for a cuddle rather than just grabbing him for one.
“I am not sure you realize this makes you sound a bit unhinged. You need to let this go, and then some,” a second person advised. “She was doing something nice for her grandchild who needed a nappy change and to help you,” wrote another incredulously. “This is not an overbearing MIL issue, there is either something else going on under the surface or you have some broader issues which you need to sort out.”Others said they understand where the mom was coming from, but she could handle it differently in the future.
“Maybe it would help if you consciously created an opportunity for MIL another time — when you know baby needs a change and she’s there, you could ask if she’d mind changing them for you,” one commenter suggested. “It might help you feel more in control of the situation and gradually get used to the idea of extended family having more input into baby’s cares.”
