Sometimes my heart aches when I think about having to leave Dallas at the end of the year when my internship ends. Whether it’s admiring the red Pegasus at the top of the Magnolia Hotel on my way to work or getting invested in the minutiae of city politics, I have grown to love this place in a few, short months.
And if you love Dallas, that means embracing Texas with a big, Texas-size hug. I’ve tried to develop the Texan ability to be friendly in any situation. I enjoy seeing things that would be strange anywhere else but are completely normal here — like snakeskin cowboy boots peeking out under a businessman’s trousers. The one time my parents and I went to a Buc-ee’s on a road trip to Houston and tasted a brisket sandwich, we couldn’t get enough.of Texas a few months ago.
What followed that evening was quintessentially Texan too. Thousands of fairgoers were evacuated after I left because of a shooting. Luckily no one was killed, but. I got back home around 7 p.m., but if I had stayed at the fair just an hour longer, who knows what could have happened.on weapons — that licensed gun owners were allowed to carry their weapons in a concealed manner in most areas of the fairgrounds, I wasn’t even surprised.
It’s sad, but that detail really did help people who weren’t familiar with Dallas get a sense for the place I was moving to and the gravity of the work this paper does.These instances of gun violence have become so normalized and typical of Texas that it seems no one has any energy left to feel outrage or work on real regulation. I hope people in power think of the families with young kids ditching their strollers at the fairgrounds to run for their lives.
