Dominic Perrottet, who was on the election campaign trail on Thursday, apologised to Sydneysiders after the city's train network went into meltdown as he announced a fare-free day to make up for the disruption.
Services ground to a halt on Wednesday during the afternoon peak after a network-wide failure in the Sydney Trains radio system.
"I've made it very clear to the Secretary of the Department that my expectation is there is a fare-free day to make up someway for what occurred yesterday," Mr Perrottet said. Mr Perrottet also defended the Coalition's record on transport as it seeks to win a fourth consecutive term in office on March 25.
Sydneysiders have been promised a similar situation will not arise again on the city's train system in the future.
