If New York-centric late ’90s and early ’00s nostalgia had a poster girl, it would be Sandy Liang. And now, she's collaborating with VANS_66.
If New York–centric late ’90s and early ’00s nostalgia had a poster girl, it would be. The designer’s brand ethos revolves around this era—and the idea that we don’t have to let go of our childhoods in order to dress like adults. Playfulness is what Liang is interested in , and now she’s turned her eye to a cult sportswear label.
On February 21, the designer will release a collaboration with Vans, a collection that includes 13 pieces of ready-to-wear and accessories. The project comes after Liang debuted a custom Vans slip-on platform at her first fashion show for spring 2020. Liang has designed butterfly-printed and tie-dye bucket hats, fanny packs, hoodies, biker shorts, striped polos, track pants, and, of course, classic Vans sneakers in leopard, black, and embellished baby pink.
Liang, who wore Vans throughout middle and high school, was thrilled to be able to work with the company. “It was such an interesting exercise,” she says. “I had to look at what I really cared about and what was core to me and distill that into something I could work with and apply to the classic Vans styles.” Liang adds, “I think I literally scrolled through all of my past collections and looked at the photos on my phone.
