When I run a Google Image Search for “Coachella style,” I receive a flower-crown-wearing barrage of the same results: Cutoff denim shorts! Bandeau tops! A wide-brim hat! Something with fringe! While this look is largely for the people enjoying the beating sun and pulsating tunes of Coachella on the West Coast, let’s not forget Kate Moss, a festival icon in her own right.
A Glastonbury girl at her core, the British model has long been in the rock-and-roll scene and folded that into her look. She famously—and tumultuously—dated Pete Doherty of the Libertines and Babyshambles and later married Jamie Hince of the Kills. Moss also sang in Primal Scream’s “Some Velvet Morning” back in 2003. IMDB lists one of her famous quotes—maybe apocryphally—as: “I would have wanted to be a rock star, a lead singer, if I wasn’t a model. I’d go touring in a bus with my band.
Her impracticality made her stand out. During her Doherty era, she wore a pair of skinny leather pants with a lace black top and stiletto boots. In another image, she sports a beige sweater with a sequined shrug—completely bizarre for any daytime festival—and hangs off of Doherty, who wears a thin white tattered tank top. Another cursory image search will show Moss in an oversized fur vest, almost as if she skinned a coyote herself.
