Is your name on this year's list of hurricane names? Or maybe your name has been 'retired' from being used for future storms.

These are the 21 names that will be given to tropical storms and hurricanes that form during the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. If all 21 names are exhausted, a supplemental list of names will be used.The task of naming tropical systems and retiring names belongs to a regional committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The committee — which includes representatives of our country’s National Hurricane Center — has six lists of 21 names, covering six hurricane seasons.

After six years, the lists get recycled, so most of the names will be used again. However, every so often, the committee removes the names of storms that result in a high number of fatalities or cause extremely costly damage. Those names are pulled out of the rotation and replaced. This is what parts of Manville looked like in early September 2021, when the remnants of Hurricane Ida dumped huge amounts of rain on many areas of New Jersey. In addition to widespread flooding and property damage, Ida killed 30 people across the Garden State.In late April, the regional hurricane committee decided tothat caused many deaths and tremendous destruction in the southern U.S. and in the Northeast region during the 2021 season: Ida.
