Alabama's largest city will be looking for a new police chief. Mark McMurray, who has led the Huntsville Police Department since 2015, announces he will retire March 1. The city has named an interim chief.
Huntsville police chief Mark McMurray, who has been credited with modernizing the department and enhancing mental health response training for officers, announced his retirement Friday.
McMurray’s tenure was also marked by criticism in the aftermath of 2020 police brutality protests in Huntsville as well as the 2021 murder conviction of an officer in a line-of-duty shooting.“I want to thank Mayor Tommy Battle for the opportunity to lead the men and women of HPD,” McMurray said in the announcement. “I will leave the force knowing it has a strong leadership team that will help take HPD to the next level in public safety.
