About 40 people would be served in the remainder of 2023 and 80 next year, relieving jail overcrowding and improving the lives of inmates by moving their cases forward, county officials said. County officials said there are about 300 inmates among the jail’s current population of 4,300 who have been deemed incompetent to stand trial. As a result, at least 150 inmates are on a waitlist for a treatment bed and inpatient competency restoration services from a state hospital at any given time.
