Authorities say a 4-metre humpback whale is unlikely to survive after being struck in the head by a boat propeller off the state's north-west coast.

DBCA said staff monitored the animal for several hours before it was observed swimming into deeper water.Marine wildlife experts determined the whale's chance of survival was extremely low.It was the second collision incident recorded off Dampier in two months. A whale calf was hit by a tugboat in August during a routine Woodside Energy operation, about 6 kilometres out to sea.Pilbara Ports Authority reported two separate incidents of whales being struck by commercial vessels between August 5 and 12, 2022.

In 2021, a recreational vessel collided with a breaching whale off Onslow, capsizing the vessel and throwing two people overboard.Humpback whales migrate along the western and eastern coast of Australia between March and October each year.
