A daily cycle in brain temperature has been linked in a new study to survival after traumatic brain injury According to recent studies, the average human brain temperature changes far more than thought previously. This might be an indication of healthy brain activity. Whereas oral temperature is no
One study found the average measured brain temperature was 38.5 °C , but it ranged from 32.6 to 42.3°C .
Healthy human brain temperature extremes show relatively hot temperatures in post-ovulation females in the morning compared with coldest temperatures in males at night. Lighter yellow represents hotter temperatures. Credit: Nina Rzechorzek/MRC LMB/Brain Brain regions selected for temperature measurement using magnetic resonance spectroscopy are shown as overlays on standard MRI brain scans in various planes. 80 regions were chosen in the cerebrum and grouped into 4 concentric layers . One region was chosen in the hypothalamus , and one region from the thalamus . The hypothalamus is a key region for regulating many things including temperature, sleep, and body clocks.
“We found that brain temperature drops at night before you go to sleep and rises during the day. There is good reason to believe this daily variation is associated with long-term brain health—something we hope to investigate next.”Dr. Nina Rzechorzek, co-author of the study.
