The creators of ‘White House Plumbers’ chat with VF about the series's finale—“the low emotional point of the whole series”—and capturing the end of the “bromance” between Liddy and Hunt.

follows Hunt and Liddy’s sometimes bromance, sometimes rivalry, and misplaced devotion to an administration that would ultimately betray them. “Hunt and Liddy were both these eccentric characters,” says Huyck. “It was just this preposterous cast. So it was just more assembling the pieces and figuring out what to put in and what to leave out as far as how to shape and hone that final episode.

“How do you balance scenes where someone is in a preposterous costume, and a wig, and fake teeth, and glasses, but then at the same time you see that he’s fighting with his family, disconnected from his kids, he’s desperate for power and he’s breaking the law to save the country,” says Huyck.about the scene—“the low emotional point of the whole series”—and capturing the end of the “bromance” between Liddy and Hunt.

Rather than try to invent relationship dynamics between characters out of thin air, Huyck and Gregory let their research color the dynamic between them. “When you’re doing the research, you’ll feel the way that the people felt about each other,” says Gregory. As such, they painted James W. McCord , the first Watergate coconspirator to turn on the operation, as an outsider and hanger-on to the core Watergate group. “Liddy did find McCord to be a bit of an oddball,” says Huyck.

“What we wanted to do is humanize this whole thing as much as possible, because a lot of the other depictions of Watergate, everything lives on this very Olympian scale,” says Gregory. “We wanted it to be scrappy and low-rent. McCord doesn’t get soup, and he’s pissed. Is that why he turned on them? Maybe.”After McCord cooperates with the government investigation, Hunt and Liddy wind up incarcerated together with a bunch of their other coconspirators, awaiting their fate.

According to their research, Hunt, Liddy, and their other Watergate conspirators were all put in one section of a jail in which they could move freely among one another. “There are a couple of sequences where all of the guys are together and in their memoirs that apparently was the case—they were in a space where they could all move around and interact,” says Gregory. “As we found out, that is not a very common thing.
