It’s just about time to start harvesting strawberries, which are planted about a year in advance, Ross said. And the plants need a lot of water in their final stretch before being picked. “The way it looks right now there’s no strawberries for 2023 because of a hard March frost and obviously this hot, hot dry weather, which has done a devastating effect on the berries,” a recorded voice says.
He said he’d rather have hot and dry weather, and then add needed water, because it’s harder to get water off the field than to add it. Patterson said he also has two lakes on the property, something not every farm has.in Lorain County, said he also prefers a slightly drier season, although having weeks of no rain is too dry.
Meanwhile at Patterson Farm, the biggest crop is apples, which hardly ever need to be watered. Patterson said if rain comes next week the trees will be fine. Otherwise, he’ll need to set up a way to irrigate them.
