Jasmine Chambers was made redundant after her manager criticised her for taking leave in Paris, which he had approved.
A former senior manager at the Bureau of Meteorology has argued she was sacked in a “sham redundancy” because she took two days of approved personal leave while attending a work conference in Paris.
He alleged in court that within months of working for the bureau, Chambers’ manager – chief scientist Dr Gilbert Brunet – told her at a performance review in August 2019 that she would be sacked for reasons including taking too much leave in Paris while attending a UNESCO conference. He said Brunet later claimed Chambers had shown “poor judgment” by taking the leave and “did not consider public perception”, including the possibility that arriving days before the event could be brought up in Senate Estimates or a freedom of information request.
Brennan told the court that the chief scientist had shown “gormlessness in workplace relations” and had attempted to protect his own position as he was also under a period of probation. Brennan said the area had “complex regulatory overlays” his client was unfamiliar with, and in one instance a disaster was narrowly averted when it was discovered that Melbourne Airport’s equipment would become non-compliant at midnight, meaning it would have to shut down.
