A ring of fire will appear in the sky on October 14, when the moon will partially cover the sun in an annular solar eclipse.Get a daily digest of the latest news in tech, science, and technology, delivered right to your mailbox. Subscribe now.

Before using your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer, check them for any damage; if you find any, throw them away. Watch over children who are using solar viewers. An indirect viewing method lets you see the eclipse without looking at the Sun directly. You can make a pinhole projector with a small hole in a card and use it to cast the Sun’s image on another surface. Stand with your back to the Sun and look at the image. Never look at the Sun through the hole in the card! A cardboard box, white paper, tape, scissors, and foil are all you need to make an eclipse projector. Cut a hole in one side of the box and cover it with foil.
