Our implicit biases may run in direct opposition to our conscious thoughts because they are part of an innate schema formed by our cultural narratives and life
In a world where things move a mile a minute, our brains are often tasked with processing large amounts of information within limited windows of time. When work requires that we, under pressure and up against deadlines, our brains take shortcuts, making assumptions and jumping to conclusions in order to balance the mental load.
There are two types of bias: explicit and implicit, which translate to the impressions we hold at conscious and unconscious levels. With explicit bias, we make intentional decisions based on a pre-existing belief. Explicit bias is most easily identified as active discrimination; refusing to hire someone due to an awareness of their gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation, for example. Without question, this type of bias is damaging at the highest level.
The problem with this type of valuation is that it's arbitrary; neither an advanced education nor a comparatively low salary request was a key hiring factor when the process began. Having seen these things, however, the hiring manager now perceives future candidates"want too much" when their qualifications and expectations are actually an appropriate match for the position.
This process can carry over into existing workplace dynamics, as well. Focusing too much on a single piece of information skews our judgment, and it can be difficult to revise a statement we made without a complete set of facts. For example, if you provide a budget estimate for a project and later realize additional resources will be necessary to complete it, it can be difficult to"walk back" your initial projection because a more accurate cost estimate may now seem exorbitant.
