It takes the proper care and a heap of patience. But you can grow coffee inside, at home. Probably only enough for a cup or two. Still, with its beautiful glossy green leaves, fragrant white flowers and shrubby habit, Coffea arabica makes a handsome and fun houseplant. Coffee plants have what are called cherries, which grow in bunches.

Place the pot in a warm room, away from drafts, in a spot that receives bright, indirect light, such as off to the side of a sunny window. Feed your plant four times a year with a balanced fertilizer, following package directions. If you’d like to prune it, do so during spring.Your coffee plant should start blooming when it’s 3 to 5 years old. To get beans, you’ll have to hand-pollinate the flowers using a cotton swab or a small artist’s paintbrush to transfer pollen from one blossom to the next. If done correctly, the flowers will give way to cherries.
