A beauty-tech founder raised a $25 million Series B without a formal pitch deck. Here's what she brings to meetings instead.

Danielle Cohen-Shohet launched GlossGenius, a beauty-technology software company, in 2015. Cohen-Shohet shares her advice for fundraising without a formal pitch deck.

Last year, the company booked eight figures in revenue, documents verified by Insider showed. What's more, GlossGenius closed a $25 million Series B round in September and the company's software is used by more than 40,000 salons, Cohen-Shohet said. She adopted an unusual strategy during her fundraise: She didn't use a pitch deck when wooing investors. "It was a great exercise to help us think through the business in a thoughtful way," Cohen-Shohet said.

"We really wanted to get to product-market fit faster, and we were maniacally focused on getting there," she said. For example, excerpts of previous board meetings or leadership off-sites are a great way to display internal communications, she said. That gives investors a look at you as a leader and why they should trust investing in you.
