Earlier this week I got to see an early screening of The Creator, the new film by Gareth Edwards, in IMAX. But is it the best format to see the new sci-fi movie in?
has been shot on the Sony FX3 in conjunction with an Atlas Scope anamorphic lens, to deliver an aspect ratio of 2.76:1 – the widest possible cinema aspect ratio – famously used byin 1960. It was almost ironic then to be viewing this on the BFI’s 1.43:1 screen, which is tall enough that it could almost have had the film stacked twice onto the screen .
However, after the film, I got the chance to briefly quiz director Gareth Edwards about this choice of aspect ratio revealing something I wasn’t expecting. He said that the camera actually captured images at an astonishing 3.5:1 and that they had to cut off the edges of the image to get down to the already very wide 2.76:1.
I admit I have previously been sceptical about ScreenX, having first tried it out a few years ago. However, I recently went to seeat the cinema and, as I’d missed it in IMAX, took the opportunity to check it out in ScreenX. To my surprise, I was amazed at how good it was. It took a while for the movie to reach a scene that used the sides but it proved to be worth the wait: the format was the perfect match for a racing movie with the scenery flashing past like the windows in a car.
