How to attract purple martins to your San Antonio yard, a guide
Have you thought about trying to attract purple martins to your landscape? They are returning from their Amazon River wintering grounds and looking for nesting sites for the summer.
An effective strategy is to put up a purple martin apartment complex on a pole about 14 feet in the air in an open part of your yard. The open area is important because purple martins cruise high in the air and swoop after dragonflies, moths and other flying insects. Even though purple martins are not the mosquito predators we once thought they were, they are very interesting and it’s well worth the effort to get them to nest in the yard. The chatty birds keep up a steady stream of sounds, discussing their affection for or impatience with their neighbors, along with the state of available nesting materials and access to tasty insects.
Some of the most attractive shrubs and small trees make excellent cover and nesting sites for birds. Great choices include hollies, old-fashioned roses, anaqua, Mexican plum, huisache, Turks cap, pyracantha, condalia and yucca. Individual plants can be placed in the landscape, but groupings of three to seven are even more effective.
