feel like a coffee shop you might find tucked between the shops and bars of Santurce, San Juan’s vibrant creative district. Instead, it sits at the corner of Hope Street and Rochambeau Avenue, not far from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The goal at this cafe, according to Milena Pagán, its owner and head chef, is to fill a gap in a traditionally white area, and provide a taste of the Caribbean in her adopted home.
Milena Pagan, the owner of Little Sister, right, and her husband Darcy Coleman inside the restaurant., an all-day Puerto Rican–inspired café. Whereas many of the city’s Latin restaurants cluster along Broad Street, a historically Hispanic neighborhood, Little Sister is staking its claim in Providence’s college district.
The cafe boasts a robust menu of savory dishes, but pastries are the most popular offering at Little Sister, says Pagán. Her quesitos, crafted with Little Sister’s own house-made puff pastry, are stuffed with sweet cream cheese and tropical fruits like guava and banana. Her French toast, made by dicing leftover brioche and soaking it in a rich custard, is baked, like a bread pudding, in a bain marie, then sliced and served with fresh berries and a drizzle of dulce de leche.
