Ng's financial model started with life expectancy—85 years—wanting to keep his assumptions conservative. 365 days in a year, multiplied by 85 years, was 31,025 days. Deducting 33% of it for sleep, that left 20,683"adjusted total days on earth." Then he set about quantifying the essentials.
Ng remembers the message:"we'll gut your family" splattered in red paint across the walls of his family's home in Hong Kong. The year was 2008 and Maurice was 18. His mother tried to play it off as neighborhood kids playing a prank. He began tutoring kids in math and working at McDonalds to scrounge together $1200 a month to give to his parents. He eventually got a scholarship to Baruch College. He started out as pre-med but quickly switched to finance when he realized that a doctor's salary wouldn't be enough to pay off his father's mounting debts.
