The war in Ukraine does not mark the first - nor the last time - arms dealers have moved in on a global catastrophe, writes Professor Joseph M. Siracusa.
“The fact is”, Politico quoted one senior official as saying, “if you look soberly, the country most profiting from this war is the US because they are selling more [natural] gas at higher prices, and because they are selling more weapons.”
Because of problems restocking some of the sophisticated weapons – supply chain delays and production of computer chips - Europe worries that the US defence industry will profit even more from the war. More than half of that $858 billion will go to the US defence industry, with the top 5 – Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Boeing, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman – splitting between $150 billion and $200 billion in Pentagon contracts.
