An edit was made in the beginning of this story to correct a reference to the 1982 Cotton Bowl which should have read the 1973 Cotton Bowl.

Odds are Nick Saban won’t have to answer any such questions Saturday. Vegas is betting on it, anyway. Not since at least 1975 has Texas been such a prohibitive underdog at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Of course, playing the underdog has worked out pretty well for the Longhorns. In compiling a record of 7-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 since the advent of the polls, Texas has been ranked higher than Alabama only once.

By the time the schools faced each other again in the ‘60 Bluebonnet Bowl, a 3-3 tie, a couple of dynasties were in the making. The next time Royal and Bryant squared off, in the ‘73 Cotton Bowl, both had three national titles and each were running the Wishbone. Royal had availed himself of Emory Bellard’s genius after a dismal three-year stretch in the mid-’60s, winning two national titles as a result. Once Bryant had been exposed to Oklahoma’s brand of the triple option in a 1970 Bluebonnet Bowl, he asked Royal if he could check it out the following spring.
