Lightsaber duels have always been a staple of Star Wars, yet modern productions prove the fights have changed - and even improved - from Lucas’ films.
Since the lightsaber duel became an iconic element of Star Wars, the fights in the more modern productions have somewhat changed and in some ways even improved on George Lucas' films. Of the nine mainline Skywalker Saga films, there is only Star Wars: The Last Jedi that does not feature a typical lightsaber fight.
Star Wars' Original Trilogy Drew On Western Fencing & Some Kendo Firstly, it is worth exploring how Lucas' respective trilogies were influenced in terms of their lightsaber combat. The original trilogy was naturally much less flashy and cinematic than the prequel trilogy was, simply due to the smaller budgets, less-advanced nature of filmmaking, and the somewhat smaller scope of the films.
The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy Absorbed Chinese DanDao & Tai Chi The Star Wars prequel trilogy then changed lightsaber duels by adding new inspiration to the Western fencing and Kendo style of the original trilogy. These inspirations were Chinese forms like DanDao and Tai Chi. Though Lucas' duels still emulated the idea of Samurai first and foremost, the Chinese influences allowed the battles to flow much more smoothly.
Why Chinese Fighting Styles Are More Appropriate For Lightsaber Duels Again, while Lucas incorporate some Chinese fighting styles in the prequels, the overall basis of the Jedi remained Samurai despite the many different forms of lightsaber combat in Star Wars. With more modern Star Wars projects though, it is clear that, while Jedi still emulate Samurai in how they act and their culture, their fight scenes are much more openly incorporating different styles.
