A new county blueprint focuses on supporting the workforce, expanding facilities and increasing overall access

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is considering investments to make care more accessible and affordable to families, amid rising costs and a shortage of spots, county supervisors voted unanimously to develop the blueprint to build on existing county programs to remove barriers to accessing child care.

The new department will be at the helm of achieving the blueprint’s goals, starting by growing funding and support for child care, conducting further research and streamlining access to child care information and resources. But the pandemic led to a rare infusion of funding to help stabilize the child-care industry nationally.a portion of pandemic relief money and other funds to child care, including $10 million for vouchers for care for front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, $1 million to support YMCA summer camp operations and scholarships and $12 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds toward child care.

Courtney Baltiyskyy, vice president of policy and advocacy for the YMCA, says the county’s child-care blueprint couldn’t be better timed.
