Author and musher BlairBraverman explains what it takes to compete in this extreme winter sport.
Then, when the weather gets colder, she is on her feet for hours a day working with the dogs and going on mushing training runs with them. She also spends ample time carrying buckets of water and 50-pound blocks of meat to feed the dogs. “I just found that that pretty much gets me into the shape I need to be in for mushing,” she explains. This helps her build the muscular and cardio endurance she’ll need to keep going throughout the long-distance race.
Mushing in those varying elements takes vastly different equipment, strategy, and clothing for both the dogs and mushers. “You try to guess what the conditions are going to be and you can send that equipment or those dog coats to different parts of the trail, but you’re not always right,” says Braverman.
Given the fact that the weather is one factor a musher can’t control, the smartest strategy is to be flexible. “The best way to plan is to not get too attached to any one plan, because you have to see how those variables are going to play out and then you need to be ready to adjust to them,” she says.Mushers are “characters,” says Braverman.
